Chinatown’s Mamie Taylor’s to Close This Weekend

Mamie Taylor’s is closing at the end of this week with the final service going down as a party on Sunday, February 23rd “from 3pm until the booze runs out.”

The Chinatown restaurant was launched at 251 East Georgia St. in the summer of 2013 by veteran bartenders Ron Oliver and Simon Kaulback. Named after its signature cocktail — “a Golden Age concoction of scotch, fresh lime juice, ginger beer and Angostura bitters — the 85-seater has focused on Southern comfort food with contemporary twists played be a talented succession of chefs (eg. Tobias Grignon, Jeff Koop, Jonas Hamre).

In addition to doing indulgent brunch services and serving up great bar snacks (mmm, ham grenades), the taxidermy-heavy room was home to pig roasts, rib fests and plenty of stories. For many in the industry it was a home away from home; a place to meet up with cohorts and sip well-made drinks after clocking out. The room had great old bones, and their DIY design job lent it lots of character. Here are some shots I took during its construction back in 2013…

A note from Ron: “All of the staff past and present, as well as every guest who walked through the door, were a part of what made the place great. Mamie Taylor’s is a bar that other bartenders recommend. When their shifts end, they are sitting at my bar. That means a lot to me. I am extremely proud of what we accomplished over the last 7 years.”

Regarding the closing party, Ron says “Hawaiian shirts are not required but definitely encouraged.”
