The People

Bernd & Stefanie Schales — Winemaker, Viticulturist, Sales & Proprietors

About 8th Generation Vineyard

As the proprietor of 8th Generation Vineyard, Stefanie does more than walk the dog in the vineyard.

Professionally trained as a draftswoman, Stefanie has a strong appreciation for order, structure, and balance. Tremendous skills that are most beneficial to our business. She is at the very epicentre of managing both our business, as well as our young, energetic family.

She founded 8th Generation Vineyard, together with her husband Bernd, in 2007. Starting a winery in the Okanagan was not about a lifestyle choice, it was about finding the best terroir in the New World; on a very slim, cold climate wine region, belt.

She grew up in a family with a grape growing history, dating back to the 1600s. At an early age, she learned that farming isn’t an easy trade. One of the reasons she went in a totally different direction and did an apprenticeship as a draftswoman, finished in 1994 and worked for one of the best 10 architects in Germany. Meeting her husband Bernd, immigrating to Canada with their one- year old daughter, brought her back to farming, grapes and wine.
