The GOODS from Tacofino

Vancouver, BC | Tacofino brings its celebrated brand of California-inspired cuisine and surf-centric spirit to another neighbourhood in Vancouver today by opening the doors on a new counter-service restaurant, bar and patio in the heart of the Yaletown district at 1025 Mainland Street.

Tacofino in Yaletown serves up its trademark lineup of fresh, eclectic tacos and burritos and an array of housemade cocktails and local craft and import beer selections in a refurbished space that features Eighties-inspired, SoCal surf-punk décor, a 38-seat dining room, 12-seat patio and take-out service for the Tacofino fan on the go.

Open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to late Thursday through Saturday, Tacofino in Yaletown is the latest addition to a family business that began with the original Tacofino food truck in Tofino and has since grown to encompass three food trucks, four brick-and-mortar restaurants, a legion of ardent followers and menus proudly featuring products that are Ocean Wise-approved, antibiotic- and hormone-free, raised ethically and made locally.

Beyond the famous Fish Taco, which will be a mainstay on the Yaletown menu, Tacofino will introduce a number of new items, from starters and sides like Chipotle Kale Caesar Salad and Pepper Shrimp with Spicy Peanut Sauce to Burrito varieties like Tater Tot Carnitas, Beef Brisket Barbacoa, Smoked Tuna and Crispy Squid and Tacos ranging from Lemongrass Chicken, Soft and Crunchy Carnitas and White Bean.

At the bar, patrons can sample a pint of rotating local beer selections on tap from such craft breweries as Tofino Brewing, Brassneck and Red Truck as well as a variety of import beers by the bottle and tall can, or quench their thirst with one of Tacofino’s housemade tequila-based bottled cocktails like the Paloma, Margarita or Mexican Mule.

“Whether it’s for eat-in or grab-and-go service, we’re proud to bring our signature style of tacos and burritos to a brand new location,” says Jason Sussman, who cofounded the company with Kaeli Robinsong in 2009. “We’re excited to unveil some unique menu items and introduce ourselves to our new neighbours in Yaletown.”

Décor-wise, Vancouver designer Shiloh Sukkau — who also engineered the ‘70s-themed, windswept design of Tacofino’s Gastown location — turned to SoCal surf-punk style, artist Keith Haring and collage poster art as inspirations for the layout of the new Yaletown location. From a kitchen and bar constructed from powder-coated steel mesh and oak ply and tile-mosaic tables that evoke images of skyscrapers and city street grids to a massive floor-to-ceiling mural featuring shades of hot pink, army green and cool blue splashed on canvas over brick that conjures up images of urban oceanside hotspots like Venice Beach, the entire space is bathed in the spirit of the 1980s.

“We aimed for a more rural, far-flung beach feel to the Gastown location, but when it came to Yaletown, we wanted to summon up a totally different, bright and sunny city-type beach scene yet still pay homage to the West Coast spirit that helped to initially inspire the birth of the Tacofino brand,” says Sukkau, who worked alongside local artists such as Roland Eickmeier, Courtney Presber, Meghann Hubert, Caroline Weaver and John Burgess to bring out the true spirit of the new space.

About Tacofino

8804429051_9a45a03fe1_k
Tacofino was born out of a desire to create a unique dining experience by offering quality, freshness and affordability with an environmental and nutritional conscience.  Fast “slow” food is a concept that really appeals to us, so we make everything from scratch and with love, but without the wait. Our menu is inspired by our world travels, taking the Baja-style taco to another level. Our truck has been a phenomenon in Tofino; it is vibrant, bright orange, with local artist Lee Robinsong’s painting of the Virgin de Guadalupe holding a taco. It is an homage to the birthplace of the taco, Mexico and Baja California. We now have trucks in Vancouver and Victoria as well; and most recently, two new restaurants in Vancouver, one on East Hastings and one in Gastown.
