Hunting Titles & Smelling Deep At MacLeod’s

Macleod’s is a bookstore of rare beauty located at 455 West Pender Street. It’s evolved into an institution since its start in the early 1960s, changing location once (after a devastating fire in 1982) and getting ever prettier and all the more distinctively aromatic with every decade (when deep in the shelves, a special smell imprints on the temporal lobe like bacon — never to be forgotten). In addition to the many dozens of bookcases jammed with titles that answer to a loose arrangement orchestrated by owner Don Stewart, there are stacks of books occupying every flat surface not required by shoe or desk.
