Towel Power | Legend | The white towels that people wave in the stands at hockey games, particularly during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The phenomenon originated in Vancouver in 1982 when then Canucks’ coach Roger Nielsen attached a trainer’s towel to the end of a hockey stick and raised it to the referees in mock surrender (on account of their rotten officiating). Canucks fans have been bringing white towels to games ever since, and the practice is now copied by nearly every team in the league.
