Fergie’s Cafe Announces New Management Team in Anticipation of Reopening

The GOODS from Fergie’s Cafe

Squamish, BC | Fergie’s Cafe is pleased to announce its new management team in advance of the restaurant’s highly anticipated reopening this summer. Victor Pulleyblank will be helming the kitchen and nurturing culinary talent as executive chef, while Naomi Aris Horii will ensure the beloved café’s spirit thrives as restaurant manager of the newly rebuilt and redesigned Fergie’s.

When Jake and Jess Freese took ownership of Sunwolf Riverside Resort nine years ago, they immediately recognized the importance of the café and brought the 70-year-old Fergie’s back to life. A devastating fire last year forced Fergie’s to close, but from tragedy came an opportunity to design a new kitchen and bar that can meet the needs of this popular destination.

“If we had searched the whole world over, Jake and I could not have found a better pair to bring our beloved Fergie’s back,’’ explains owner Jess Freese. “Victor and Naomi are not just incredibly talented and hardworking people, they are our friends, and they care deeply about the history and spirit of the café. With our new building approaching completion, we are thrilled that Fergie’s is in such good hands.”

Born in California and raised in B.C., Victor has always embraced nature and been heavily influenced by healthy eating and living. From making yogurt in his childhood kitchen to developing complicated recipes for world-class restaurants, Victor’s deep appreciation for food and evident skill for cooking have been nurtured and honed his entire life.

Victor achieved an impressive resume working in and leading ambitious kitchens at a number of renowned restaurants (Dubh Linn Gate, Araxi, Café Medina, Chambar, Blue Water, West, The Pearl) from London, U.K., to Whistler, B.C. His appreciation for locally grown and foraged ingredients combined with his desire to protect the lifeblood of Fergie’s makes him the perfect leader of the new café team. Victor takes pride in cooking the old-fashioned way and providing the community with good honest food.

Originally recruited to the Fergie’s family to elevate service and enhance the guest experience, Naomi’s role shifted dramatically when the restaurant burned down in the spring of 2018. Now, as restaurant manager, she is committed to continuing to provide the community with a caring, purposeful, gathering space.

As former co-owner and operator of Butter on the Endive catering and events, Naomi’s relationship with Fergie’s Cafe is deeply rooted. In 2010, together with her partner, the late Owen Lightly, she sparked a movement of convivial dining and collaborative cooking with their Sunwolf Supper Series. Fostering community, conversation and an appreciation for slow food and lifestyle is what Naomi is mindful to preserve, working as a team with long-time friend and colleague chef Victor Pulleyblank.

Fergie’s Cafe | Located at Sunwolf Riverside Resort where the Cheakamus and Cheekye rivers meet, Fergie’s Cafe provides a refuge and gathering place for locals and visitors alike. This Sea-to-Sky institution, known for its charming outdoor dining, wholesome food and unwavering hospitality, is currently under construction as the original building was taken by fire in April 2018. The new Fergie’s is set to open in early summer of 2019.
