Five Years Ago Today, a Local Coffee Roaster Was Getting Set to Launch in Mt. Pleasant

For this week’s edition of #ThrowbackThursday we look back exactly five years to the imminence of Elysian Coffee‘s Mt. Pleasant address, just a few days before launch…

Located on the southwest corner of Ontario and 7th (2301 Ontario St.), the new operation, which was then over a year in the making, would come complete with a 1950 cast iron 22kg Probat coffee roaster from Germany, a large bakery, and a new cupping/function facility, not to mention some pretty swell window seats for watching the world go by. The good people at Elysian Coffee are set to open a new location on Monday, December 1st. Monday’s opening – now a sure thing since they passed their final inspection earlier today – marks a major milestone for Elysian, which has – up to this point – roasted their beans off-site via the Origins Organic Coffee facility on Granville Island. If you’ve never had their coffee at their two existing cafes (1778 West 5th and 590 West Broadway), chances are you’ve sipped it at any of the many restaurants that brew it for their customers (eg. Nelson The Seagull, Lear Faye, Bestie, Burdock & Co., Harvest, among others). It’s always been excellent stuff.

The spartan space – which we toured yesterday – was designed by polymath aesthete Janaki Larson — she of the phenomenal Marche St. George. Though the shots above and below show the floor space as being completely empty, the room will have sixteen seats on opening day, plus several shelves dedicated to retail products and beans, a large table for home brewing equipment and demos, and – one assumes – many, many people.
