Branding Vancouver is a new column in which we look at some of the more interesting logos and icons that appear in Vancouver’s food and beverage scene. Some of the explanations will be long and others short, but the goal of deeper understanding will be constant. If you want the backstory of a particularly compelling local brand revealed, let us know via @scoutmagazine and we’ll try to figure it out.
The Brand: “Colour & Shape” India Pale Ale by Superflux Beer Company.
Designed by: Matt Kohlen and Adam Henderson, aka “2 guys and an experiment in beer production, currently based in Vancouver, BC.”
“Our typical creative process for a new beer:
Adam: Hey man do you like this beer name?
Matt: Yep.
Matt: Hey man do you like this label idea?
Adam: Yep.Meeting adjourned.”
The Story: According to Matt:
“Colour & Shape was just so much fun to work on. It kind of reminds me of an ice cream parlour or diner from the 50’s: bold, clean, soft, minimal and a little retro. The C&S label concept has definitely guided the visual side of Superflux. You’ll notice all of our can art has a consistent theme in blending unique colour palettes with basic shapes. Hence the name, Colour & Shape.”
