Spagfag | nickname | Short for The Old Spaghetti Factory, a Gastown restaurant that has been around since 1970. “Spagfag” is similarly employed in Victoria, which is home to an almost-as-ancient location of the same restaurant chain. Exactly when the now politically incorrect moniker entered the lexicon of both cities remains unclear, but we assume it was the early 1980s, when casual homophobia was a mainstream social product marketed to teens (a la John Hughes) and eating pretend Italian food in a make-believe factory may have sounded like a cool thing to do. We’ll say 1982. Amazingly, it persists.
