‘Piercingly Beautiful’ Vitalina Varela to Screen at The Cinematheque

The GOODS from The Cinematheque

Vancouver, BC | The Cinematheque presents Portuguese master Pedro Costa’s tremendous Vitalina Varela (2019). At last year’s Locarno Film Festival, jury president Catherine Breillat, upon bestowing the Golden Lion to Costa’s latest film, remarked: “This prize isn’t enough, though we give it unanimously. We were all stunned, overwhelmed, by this film – major film in the history of cinema from here on out.” Set in the slums of Lisbon’s now-dismantled Fontainhas district, Vitalina Varela is a bona fide masterpiece, maybe even the director’s chef d’oeuvre.
