Local Art, Hawksworth Fare Set For Western Front Dinner + Auction, Feb. 27th

Western-Front-Gala-Invite-520x803

Get your bidding on and support Western Front’s art and music programs by attending the Western Front Gala Dinner and Art Auction next Saturday. With food from the masters at Hawksworth Restaurant, live music, and plenty of cocktails there plenty of ancillary reasons to attend this charitable event. If you’re unfamiliar with Western Front, check out this historical backgrounder. Here are just a few works up for auction that we’d be stoked to snag…

Life in Stills: Slideshow 2 is a video of rotating 35 mm slides that chronicle artist Erin Siddall’s late grandfather’s life as eye doctor and family man. From corneas to sentimental shots of family vacations, this montage is like an old school time capsule dug up— eerily captivating.

Turtle Express: Colour and texture are key in Mark Delong’s art. Turtle Express uses cotton thread on layers of printed cardboard to present an almost sculptural feel with a playful tone.

Sculpture: Zoe Kreye’s ceramic and foam sculpture, Our Missing Body, is a must have for those looking to examine the relationship between art and human contact, or just looking for a coffee table centrepiece.

Lunar Prints: Holly Ward’s silkscreen Urras is one killer sci-fi print. The planet depicted is heavily inspired by the socio-political nation described in the novel The Dispossessed and is damn beautiful to look at.

Movement: Althea Thauberger’s Anatomie Artistique overlays one back bending gymnast over another, capturing fluid movement in the stillness of a print. We dare you to try looking at it without turning your head sideways.

Relevant: London artist Nils Norman creates political pieces, like Ye Olde Gallery, that spark up the kind of discussion about art, urban planning, and restructuring that hits us Vancouverites real close to home.
