There’s a fantastic (and fun) group show on right now entitled Leftovers: A Topography of Chance. Curated by Patrik Andersson of TRAPP Projects, it brings together photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, video and mixed-media installation by noteworthy emerging and established artists.
Housed in a leftover space (previously occupied by Catriona Jeffries Gallery), the exhibition quite literally explores the idea of leftovers—leftover spaces, leftover materials, the leftovers of art production.
There are oversized fishing waders (Cameron Kerr); a Styrofoam cup and a pink balloon (Ryan Quast); a table tennis table filled with all kinds of found and made objects (Steven Brekelmans); Kurdish rugs (Parvin Peivandi); photographs of old cars and apples (Christos Dikeakos); maps of Canada (Jean MacRae); a dust bunny (Cameron Kerr); and more. Though all seemingly unrelated, as you go around the exhibition connections start to form, whether it be through materials used or shared ideas.
Visit and chances are you’ll run into Patrik, who will share anecdotes about the works and how they came to be part of the show. Artists included are: Kim Kennedy Austin, Steven Brekelmans, Andrew Dadson, Christos Dikeakos, Hannah Dubois, Cameron Kerr, Evan Lee, Jean MacRae, N.E. Thing Co., Isabelle Pauwels, Parvin Peivandi, and Ryan Quast.
TRAPP Projects has shown in all kinds of venues including a dentist’s office, shopping malls, museums, and artist-run centres since its start in 1997. Leftovers is open on Saturdays (or by appointment) until April 6th.
For an art-filled afternoon while you’re there, you can see Birthe Piontek at Burrard Arts Foundation; a group show at Gallery Jones; Designing Death at Libby Leshgold Gallery; Scott McFarland at Monte Clark Gallery; and Etienne Zack at Equinox Gallery; and finish with burger and pint on the patio at Red Truck Brewery — all within walking distance!
