Searching for Vancouver’s Best Food and Drink with Chef Daniel McGee

The Dishes is a new Scout column that asks Vancouverites to walk us through a map of their ideal day and night on the town. We’re talking breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night cocktails. Tax and tip included.

For this week’s edition of The Dishes, Chef Daniel McGee of Kitsilano’s award-winning Au Comptoir fills us in (and up) on some of his favourite dishes and drinks in Vancouver. We begin at the fixed point of…

Au Comptoir 2278 W 4th Ave MAP

Good morning! What’s for breakfast/brunch?

For breakfast we’re heading to Sunshine Diner on Broadway. It’s close to my place and I love a classic BLT anytime of day.

Where should we meet for coffee/tea?

49th Parallel for a cappuccino, and maybe to sneak in a donut. Their patio is a great spot to people watch or meet some friends and get the day started.

49th Parallel Coffee Roasters & Lucky's Doughnuts (Kits) 2198 West 4th Ave. MAP

Now we’re hungry again. What’s for lunch?

Gotta go to Hokkaido Ramen Santouka on Broadway for a bowl of noodles. Add kimchi for some extra kick.

Who has you figured out at Happy Hour?

PiDGiN in Gastown has a great happy hour (both early and late night). Their Capo Negroni always does the trick. I also used to work there so it’s a great chance to catch up with old friends, which can be dangerous, haha.

What’s for dinner?

Since we’re in Gastown, let’s head to The Mackenzie Room and crush their “I Want It All” meal. Chef Sean does playful delicious food and I always have a blast eating there!

What’s for dessert?

If we’re not lighting pie on fire with bourbon at The Mackenzie Room then we’re heading to visit Makoto and Amanda at Mak N Ming for a cheeky dessert and some amazing wine.

Mak N Ming (Closed) 1629 Yew St. MAP

Where are you taking us for late night cocktails?

We’ve got to go see my buddy Robyn Gray at Prohibition in the basement of the Hotel Georgia. He’s always trying out some interesting new cocktails and knows exactly what I’m looking for.

  1. Bravo, Chef Daniel!!! You obviously know your way around the culinary treasures of the city. By the way, do not forget people, this suave man is the Chef Extraordinaire at Au Comptoir in Kitsilano. Don’t just pass it by; drop in and explore the available delicacies of the day.
