Whistler, BC | A whole season for the arts! Arts Whistler and the cultural community are shining a spotlight on Whistler’s arts scene this fall with Fall for Arts. Whistler’s autumn season is rich with popular festivals, art markets, creative workshops, galleries and exhibit openings, local music, and movie nights – all of which make Whistler the vibrant and dynamic place it is. Fall for Arts kicked off on September 1st and runs through early December. Here’s what’s to come on the immediate horizon in November…

EARTHSAVE FILM SCREENINGS: EATING YOU ALIVE

Half of all adults in the US struggle with chronic health conditions. Eating You Alive takes a scientific look at the reasons we’re so sick, who’s responsible for feeding us the wrong information, and how we can use whole-food, plant-based nutrition to take control of our health, one bite at a time. Earthsave Whistler promotes a plant-based diet for health, the environment, and animal welfare.

Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is a down-on- his-luck private eye in 1977 Los Angeles. Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is a hired enforcer who hurts people for a living. Fate turns them into unlikely partners after a young woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) mysteriously disappears. Their investigation takes them to dark places as anyone else who gets involved in the case seems to wind up dead.
ARTS WHISTLER LIVE!: THE HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER

Kick off Arts Whistler Live! with The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer. Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a ‘decades-deep blues style’ with a jolt of renewed energy. It’s the blues the way it was meant to be played.
QUEST UNIVERSITY PRESENTS “THE NATURE OF VIRTUE”

What is the nature of virtue? This is a central concern of ethics, but we often shy away from discussing moral virtue, thinking that there is either no such thing, or that it is impossible to define, or that it cannot be known. In this talk, we will consider a couple of candidate answers to this question, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each. We will also consider the extent to which whether the virtuous life overlaps with the good life.

YOGA AT THE AUDAIN

Nourish the soul with a yoga practice set amongst the inspiring Permanent Collection and temporary exhibitions of
the Audain Art Museum. Yoga instructor Laura Davies will lead you through a flowing session that centres on the confluence of art and yoga. Each session will focus on the energy of a different gallery or artist.

The tours begin in Whistler Village where your guide will take you on a three-hour, fully guided tour that includes public art installations, hotel collections, some lesser known (and unsanctioned, but remarkable) street art Whistler’s cultural history, and unique mountain stories.
CULTURE MAPS: SELF-GUIDED ARTS AND CULTURE TOURS
Arts Whistler’s Culture Maps are a catalyst for creative discovery that help you navigate Whistler’s cultural venues, museums, galleries, heritage locations, and public art pieces. The digital map has filters that you can click on and off, as well as a search function at the top so you can create your own path. We also have a printed version that highlights the cultural nuggets in the Village. You can pick up a copy at the Arts Centre or at participating venues around Whistler. Whistler’s Public Art Program and the new Cultural Connector are initiatives of the Resort Municipality of Whistler. We’ve rolled them into our print and digital Village Culture Map so you can see them all in one place.

WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?: HEALING THE LEGACY OF RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS
On now – April | Location: Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre Between 1831 and 1969, residential schools operated in Canada through arrangements between the Government of Canada and the church. One common objective defined this period – the assimilation of Aboriginal children. This exhibit explores the history and legacy of Canada’s Residential School System through survivor stories, archival photographs, and documents curated by Iroquois artist, Jeff Thomas.
1923 CARTER TOWNSEND MOUNTAINEERING EXPEDITION PHOTO EXHIBIT

Come explore the story and photographs of an exploratory mountaineering expedition in Whistler in 1923. Soak up the crystal clear vintage photographs of our beautiful mountain region from some of the pioneers who first conquered it.
PRIOR’S ANNUAL TOPSHEET EXHIBITION

Scope out the latest designs in ski and snowboard gear – then ride them next season! This exhibit features the finalists and winners from Prior’s Annual Topsheet Competition. Browse the ski and snowboard topsheet designs, all made by local artists. The winning designs will be featured in Prior’s 2017/18 line of skis and snowboards.
