by Marshall To | I have a soft spot for places like Bai Bua in Hastings-Sunrise. It’s a family-owned operation from front to back with the older generation pumping out traditional Thai cuisine and the younger generation filling the seats and handling everything front of house. Though it totally reminds me of my upbringing, the high quality comfort food is the main draw. The bright interior is also clean and warm; its painted sacred lotus flower (‘bai bua’ in the vernacular) motif and brass/gold accents giving it a contemporary feel.
There are photos of each dish on the menu, making it easier for Pad Thai-typical customers to try something new. If you’ve never been before, start with the curry noodle (a northern Thai dish of egg noodles and chicken in an aromatic curry broth) and/or the stir-fried Holy Basil (diced chicken or pork with green beans, Thai basil, chillies, and rice). With nothing on offer over $10.99, the little restaurant – still enjoying its first year – is positioned well for a long, delicious run.

You have to try the Panang curry, it’s my fave.
Aloy, as they say in Thai!
