The Beer Brief is a round-up of all the local beer news and events we think you should know about. Got news brewing? Send it to thalia [at] scoutmagazine.ca and we’ll do our best to include it!
TAP TAKEOVER | Superflux and Dageraad are dropping a new collaboration farmhouse IPA this week. This prophetic beer is called – what else? – “Superaad“, which is surely a sign of something delicious. In addition to being available in Dageraad’s tasting room, it will also be pouring at The Magnet this Thursday, along with a bunch of other beers from both breweries. Sounds like a pretty irresistible reason for a trip to Gastown.
PUNSCH IT | Also launching on Thursday is an intriguing sounding collab between two East Van newbs, Altitude Beer Co. (brewing out of Callister) and the Nordic-inspired eatery Finfolk. They’ve combined their talents to produce a Scandinavian-style farmhouse ale called “Punsch It!” and a special dish to accompany it. Apparently, ‘punsch’ is a centuries old tea-flavoured alcoholic beverage meant to be consumed sociably and paired with other traditional comfort foods. Sounds like a pretty perfect combo for those rainy nights ahead. More details here.
RARE BREWS | When Friday rolls around and you’re looking to self-reward, consider heading up Main Street to Portland Craft and treating yourself to some truly rare beers. The three California breweries involved in this special tap takeover are AleSmith, Firestone Walker and The Bruery. For those who dislike suspense, here’s the beer list: AleSmith’s Decadence Imperial California Common, Vietnamese Speedway Stout, Celestial Dawn Speedway Stout; Firestone Walker’s 2018 Stickee Monkee Quad, 2017 Velvet Merkin Oatmeal Stout, Bretta Tangerine Berliner Weiss; and The Bruery’s Terreux Peach Sour Blonde. That’s seven delicious reasons to push through the week!
B-DAY PARTY | Faculty Brewing is three years old and on Friday they’re throwing a birthday bash to celebrate. The party goes down across the street from the brewery in the Oddity Kombucha alleyway with lots of tasty TBA beers and good times. Keep your eyes on the Faculty Instagram feed for further announcements.
CIDER + BEER | The following day, the Dominion Cider crew is setting up shop outside of Oddity Kombucha for a rad-sounding one-day-only juice, cider and beer event. Stop by to check out the live apple crushing and juicing action, plus all sorts of apple-icious refreshments including on-tap cider and beer collabs with Faculty and Luppolo. Yum! Find out more.
GET DEVILISH | Besides the pissing rain, there’s lots to love about the fall season and Strange Fellows is bringing together some of the best of it with their September Strange Day this weekend. The Hop Devil Hootenanny includes all sorts of autumnal goodness like a mini Fresh Hop tap takeover, free corn-on-the-cob, knee-slapping live jams from the Still Creek String Band, games and good times all around. Help appease the Hop Devil by showing up and then drinking up to ensure a healthy future harvest. See you there! Details here.
NOW OPEN | Slow Hand’s new East Van tasting room is now open on Powell Street, in the space formerly occupied by Doans Craft Beer Company. So far, the space is open to the public Thursday through Sunday, serving up five taps of their own mostly sessionable beers. The next time you’re thirsty and in the hood, be sure to pop by and show your support!
MORE OKTOBERFEST | Still feeling ambivalent about what to do for Oktoberfest? Well, here’s yet “Another” festive gig to add to your list of options: New West’s Another Beer Company is throwing a free day-long party that includes German-inspired beers from ABC and other local breweries, snacks and more. Advance ticket purchases are also available if cheap beer and/or a commemorative stein to drink it from sounds like a worthy incentive to you. Check out more details and all of the options here.
Or how about switching it up by strutting down to Chinatown to for the first ever “Bawktobeerfest” at Juke Fried Chicken? The ticket price includes night-long snacks (like Schnitzel Double Down sandwiches and Juke-brats sausages) and an icy pint of Jukefest Lager (Juke’s exclusive collaboration with Strange Fellows Brewing). Get your tickets in advance here.
GET WILD | The latest beer-brained child of Mike Willis (organizer of Hopwired and the Fruit Beer Festival) is a day devoted to barrel-aged brews, called “Wild Night Out”. As fans of the aforementioned beer festivals can probably guess, many of the beers included will be event exclusives not available elsewhere in Canada, coming at ya from near (East Van, Washington state) and far (Florida, Ontario and Australia!) They’ll be pouring over the course of two curated all-inclusive four-hour-long sessions, along with fellow ferments by way of wild ciders, kombuchas from O5, a palate refreshing lager list, and pickle bar. Yum! What will possibly be the wildest beer event of the season is going down for one-day-only on November 30th with tickets available right now here.
ICYMI | Elsewhere on Scout, Jamie Mah recently got all of the hairy details about The Parkside Brewery’s Dreamboat Hazy IPA as part of our ongoing Branding Vancouver series. Find out more about this good-looking can by reading the full interview here.
Surprised there’s no mention of Storm Brewing’s 25th anniversary part this Sunday: https://www.stormbrewing.org/events
