Vancouver Would Be Cooler If It Didn’t Occasionally Scare the Living Daylights Out of Us

With its rising and falling pitch, the drone-like air raid siren emerged in the 20th century as one of the world’s most terrifying sounds, striking fear in the hearts of all who heard it during World War II, the Cold War, even now. Right here at home the spooky device and its sound have persisted as audible facets of civil defence drills, warning of imminent doom in the nuclear age. All of that is to say it was a resoundingly stupid choice for an elevator alarm at the north shore’s Cargill Grain Terminal. As residents are keenly aware, the dumb thing occasionally goes off without warning, explanation or apology (most recently on April 18, 2019). Vancouver would be cooler if they changed it. Might we suggest this equally annoying (but less scary) alternative?
