New Location Of “Rain Or Shine” Ice Cream Parlour Now Open In Cambie Village

Josie Fenton and Blair Casey opened the second location of their excellent Rain Or Shine ice cream parlour at 3382 Cambie St. (at 18th) over the weekend. The ice cream flavours, toppings, and options on offer are very similar to the original location in Kitsilano, and that includes the popular Taco Tuesday (sundaes served inside waffle tacos) and trio of “seasonal flings”. The new location – formerly a hair salon – nevertheless has its own charms and, most importantly, its very own mid-sized production space in the back.

If you’re unfamiliar with the operation, here’s some company background:

Our ice cream starts with local dairy from Birchwood Dairy in the Fraser Valley. We then add only whole ingredients to each batch with a focus on fresh and local ingredients where possible…. Hazelnuts from Agassiz, Berries from the Valley. Craft Beer from Vancouver, Honey from Langley and the list goes on!

We pride ourselves on making everything from scratch from our toppings to our waffle cones to our ice cream mix-ins. We make it all in-house using fresh, natural and local or organic ingredients whenever possible.

In store we have 15 flavours at all times, 10 Keepers and 5 Seasonal Flings that we rotate often. A couple of our specialties include our fresh waffle cones baked right before your eyes and Taco Tuesdays, where you can get a waffle cone taco with your choice of ice cream and topping.

From the start our shop has been powered with renewable energy from Cowpower, which is a great fit for our business, supporting small scale power generation on local farms using cows waste. Cows are awesome! All our packaging is compostable, and we’re proud our shop barely generates 1 bag of garbage a week! These and other efforts help us be as low impact as possible, a key value of ours.

Though sparsely furnished, the new 1,200 sqft address is not without its cool details. Union Wood Co., for example, did the open concept 16 seater’s tables, chairs, and stools. For me, the best stuff hangs from the ceiling, including a wooden waffle cone installation (still being installed above the counter on opening day) and my favourite detail: a baby bottle chandelier. Check it out the next time you’re in the neighbourhood, and aim for the brown butter snickerdoodle flavour.
