Dim Sum, Pizza, Ramen & Burgers — Seven Great Spots To Soak Up New Year’s Day

by Ken Tsui | Nothing stings more on New Year’s Day than walking up to the restaurant you’ve decided to nurse your hangover at and discovering a set of locked doors. Opening hours are a roll of the dice (at best) so don’t leave it up to chance! Start 2017 off right with this short guide to restaurants that won’t leave you high and dry on the first day of the year:

GREASY SPOON
Fable Diner | 151e E. Broadway
With an all-day breakfast menu and a top-notch double patty FD burger, Fable Diner is the Greasy Spoon joint’s prettier, more interesting younger sibling with a fancy Ivy League PhD in curing your hangover. Bonus: ridiculously good milkshakes; the best this side of Glenburn SOda Fountain.

SQUAD GOALS
Kirin Seafood Restaurant | 555 West 12th Avenue / 1172 Alberni St. | 11AM – 2:30PM
Rolling up to a place with your squad 12 deep but don’t want to wait until January for a table? Look no further than Kirin Seafood Restaurant. What the place lacks in terms of service charms it more than makes up for in hot, delicious dim sum — enough to make short work of you New Year’s resolutions.

BACK ON THE HORSE
Virtuous Pie | 583 Main St. | 11AM – 10PM
If 2017 is your year to get fit, eating smart is as important as exercise. Chinatown’s Virtuous Pie has you covered with health-focused, plant-based pizzas and vegan ice creams so you can dine with a little less guilt as you gently ingratiate yourself with that stranger called Good Health.

HANGOVER CURE
Juke | 182 Keefer St. | 11AM – 3PM
Hungover from partying to the point that you can barely stand the light of day? Consider the take-out counter at Juke, which is open on New Years Day from 11AM to 3PM. Pro-tip: they also do delivery through Door Dash so you won’t need to stray far from your blanket and Netflix cave.

NOODLING AROUND
Hokkaido Ramen Santouka | 1690 Robson St. | 11AM – 11PM
Nothing is more restorative after a night of good times like a piping hot bowl of ramen. You can thank your lucky stars that one of the best in town is open on New Year’s Day. If you’re looking to start 2017 off proper, order the Toruniku ramen with impossibly tender char-sui pork cheek.

BRUNCH PLAN
Burdock & Co. | 2702 Main St. | 10:30AM – 2PM
Open for brunch on New Years Day, Burdock & Co. is a great place to start the year off with your boo and score extra brownie points early on in the year for when you inevitably drop the ball on something important a few months down the road. Aim for the fried chicken.

WITH THE PARENTS
Homer Street Cafe | 898 Homer St. | 11:30AM – 11PM
Kick off the day with a little class at Homer Street Cafe. The Yaletown looker is open regular hours on New Year’s Day and is a great place to feed your parents rotisserie chicken and ricotta gnudi to thank them for bringing you into this world.

Reverence, Respect, and Realization: What The Acorn Taught Me

At 21 years old, I'm still just a kid and relatively new to working in restaurants, but I grew up umbilically tied to the hospitality industry. My father was a food writer, and my mother is a photographer. Their careers meant that most of my early years were spent in kitchens and dining rooms instead of on playgrounds and soccer fields; consequently, I learned my table manners before I could count past one hundred.
