We Want a Year of Art & Culture at The Vancouver Art Gallery

We’re a pretty satisfied bunch, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t covetous. Sometimes we see things out there that we just must have. This is an archive of those earthly desires. During the holiday season, the Cool Thing We Want column goes into overdrive, so keep checking back for more gift ideas.

Sure, there’s something to be said for the instant gratification of tearing open a present, but a gift that can be “unwrapped” at least 365 days is pretty darn cool too, right? A membership to the Vancouver Art Gallery consistently tops our list because it ensures a steady fix of art and culture for the next year (notably, we’re super-stoked on Takahashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, which opens on February 3rd, 2018, and will no doubt warrant at least one re-visit).

Not only does a standard membership ($48-$90) include unlimited access to all VAG exhibitions, but there are also loads of other perks to cash in on like free admission to Artists Talks, Noon Hour concerts and family-friendly events, not to mention entry to affiliated galleries across Canada. Members also get some free guest passes so that their can share the experience by taking along a friend, family member and/or date for a VAG hangout.

Since membership packages purchased online take 2-3 weeks to mail out, if you’re planning on giving one for Christmas you might want to head downtown to buy your gift directly from the Lobby’s Membership Desk (750 Hornby Street). Memberships start automatically upon purchase, so we recommend taking advantage of the Gift Certificate option to delay their activation and ensure that every single day is squeezed out of your gift of membership!
