Next Yaletown, The | Myth/Threat, Idiom | An ominous expression of cynicism regarding the future of a neighbourhood as a consequence of its perceived direction of development. It alludes to the supposed ruination of Yaletown when – after sustaining a handful of independent eateries, interesting shops and warehouse loft conversions through the 1980/90s – it suddenly found itself dwarfed by generic condo developments and inundated with expensive boutiques and big box chain restaurants.
