Summerland, BC | Okanagan Crush Pad winery is gearing up for its fourth visitor season with an expanded tasting room offering a rare glance into the art of winemaking.

On June 1, Okanagan Crush Pad will open daily, 10:30am to 5:30pm with an expanded tasting area and a program set to educate visitors. The winery has quickly gained a reputation as a leader and innovator in the areas of precision viticulture, organic farming and natural winemaking, and those aspects that set it apart will be on display for winery guests.

Okanagan Crush Pad offers a rare glance into the art of winemaking with a visitor center that is built into the heart of a state-of-the-art winemaking facility. On view, sparkling wine production, concrete fermentation tanks, and a tasting of wines made from organic grapes by employing natural winemaking techniques.

“The touring season has been strong to date with sales more than doubling from the previous year. Okanagan Crush Pad is gaining in reputation and it appears that people have discovered us”, noted owner Christine Coletta. “We expect to see a lot of visitors from the western provinces. With the Canadian dollar at its current rate, this the perfect year to explore home ground”.

Okanagan Crush Pad is also unique, as it is a custom crush facility, making its own wines, Haywire and Narrative, in addition to custom crush clients. Several different artisan wines are offered in the O Tasting Lounge such as Coolshanagh, created by Naramata vineyard owners Skip and Judy Stothert, and Samantha, a line of wines created by Whistler sommelier Samantha Rahn. Visitors can also roam our organic vineyard where they will discover grazing sheep, chickens, and ducks. An evening concert series is on offer through the summer. Bring a picnic to pair with a Haywire or Narrative wine and soak in the lake view from our patio lounge.

Okanagan Crush Pad is one of the most distinctive offerings along Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive. Visitors to Summerland should start their tour at the Tourist Information Center located on Highway 97, where the staff will point you in the right direction. As you wander Main Street you will notice the pace is different and you can start to unwind from city living. Summerland is an amazing city to experience wine country in addition to outdoor life, offering lakeside parks for water sports or picnicking, and beautiful hillside trails for hiking or trail riding.

“We have several outstanding eateries and top rated accommodation at the Summerland Waterfront Resort,” noted Coletta. “The best part – the people – who are small-town friendly. You’ll want to move here”.

    Lunch

Haywire Gamay Noir Rosé 2013 | Vancouver Magazine Top 100 Category Award Wine for Best Rosé Wine. “Okanagan Crush Pad is at the forefront of innovation in B.C., with superstar consultants Alberto Antonini and terroir expert Pedro Parra helping define new directions. Light, crisp, and bone dry, our best rosé combines the juicy berry fruit of gamay and savoury, herbal aromas of the Okanagan. Seriously structured and ageable, it is a lovely expression of our unique climate. Its tart finish is perfect for Dungeness crab cakes or melty grilled cheese sandwiches.”

Haywire Canyonview Pinot Noir 2011 | Lieutenant Governor’s Award Winner 2014 for Excellence in BC Wines. 91 points by Tim Pawsey. “One of just 12 wines awarded in this year’s B.C. Lieutenant Governor’s Awards, from low yield, with judicious use of used French oak, dark cherry notes with some mineral hints, well-structured but very approachable (91 points, $35 from the winery (haywirewinery here.com). – See more.

Haywire Wild Ferment Pinot Gris 2012 | 92 points by John Schreiner. “Haywire Switchback Vineyard Wild Ferment ($29.90). This is 100% Pinot Gris but the varietal has been omitted from the label. The winery is trying to establish its organic Switchback Vineyard as a stand-alone brand. Think Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which does not put the varietal on its label either. This is a richly textured wine with aromas of honeysuckle and herbs and flavours of pear and citrus. The finish lingers.”
