Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

IMG_0221

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. You can also check it out in The Globe & Mail, from our calendar to theirs…and yours!

ART | Cézanne and the Modern: Masterpieces of European Art is on at the VAG. Clair de Lune: 19th and Early 20th Century French Paintings (designed to complement the Cézanne exhibit) is also up on the walls. A little bit of French art is never a bad idea. If you don’t make it on the weekend, consider Tuesday night, for not only is it by-donation night, but Dr. Matthew Simms, Professor of Art History at California State University, will also be on site to give a talk about Cézanne’s works (Tuesday, Feb 24, 7pm).
Now through May 18 | Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby St) | DETAILS

OPENING | Main Street’s Hot Art Wet City is lining its walls with a group art show celebrating the Lunar New Year. It’s A Sheep Show features art (paintings, drawings, sculpture and collage) inspired by sheep, the moon, or (in a few overachieving examples) both. With submissions from over 60 local artists, this is going to be a busy little opening party – but one well worth turning up for.
Thu, Feb 19 | 7-11pm | Hot Art Wet City (2206 Main St) | DETAILS

DRAMA | Catch The Vancouver Fringe Festival’s presentation of One-Man Star Wars Trilogy at Performance Works this week. When Lucasfilm heard about his unlicensed version of the famous trilogy they asked Ross to perform for them. They dug it and gave him permission to continue. Not that we wouldn’t have been game to watch the unlicensed performance, but impressing that crew can’t be easy, so we’re betting this’ll be a good show.
Feb. 17-19 | Performance Works (1218 Cartwright St) | $25 | DETAILS
UPDATE : THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT

GIG | American indie rocker Kevin Morby plays the Electric Owl on Saturday night in support of his most recent album, Still Life, which Pitchfork describes as having “scrupulous, unshowy sound: deliberate fretwork, sparse percussion, wisps of organ and tinkling pianos dancing around the edges of the frame.” Read a Pitchfork review of Morby’s most recent album, Still Life, here and then sort yourself out with tickets (try Red Cat, Zulu or online).
Sat, Feb 21 | 8pm | Electric Owl (926 Main St) | $12 | DETAILS

THINK | The Vancouver Institute presents an evening lecture with author Joseph Boyden (Three Day Road, Through Black Spruce) this Saturday. Bowden will discuss his most recent book, The Orenda (winner of Canada Reads and nominated for both the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award for Fiction) as well as the process of writing and how he approaches First Nations issues in Canada.
Sat, Feb 21 | 8:15pm | Lecture Hall 2 | Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, UBC | DETAILS

EAT & DRINK | A couple of new and interesting joints have just opened up and are worth checking out. We’re partial to Hi-Five (grilled cheese sandwiches), Mosquito (desserts and booze), Propaganda (Coffee), Kin Kao (Thai) and The Ramen Butcher (ramen, naturally). Get a feel for them all in our super deep Anticipated Openings section.

CULTURE | If you’re jonesing for some opera, hustle yourself to The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby for Puccini’s Madama Butterfly as performed by The Burnaby Lyric Opera. Love, betrayal, heartbreak, the clash between cultures – it’s got all the juicy stuff! Performed in Italian.
Sat, Feb 21 | The Shadbolt Centre (6450 Deer Lake Ave., Burnaby | $27-35 |DETAILS

CHILL | We’re not complaining – an early Spring is great – but seeing as it doesn’t officially arrive until next month, why not slow down to appreciate Winter? As an arts and culture festival offering everything from music and art to food and film, Winterruption was designed to fill this last stretch of chilly weather with a blast of energy that will see you through until Spring.
Now – Feb 22 |  Various times | Performance Works (Granville Island) | Various $ | DETAILS

PECHA KUCHA | Pecha Kucha goes down this week. Volume #36 has a musical theme – presenters are musicians, composers, producers and supporters of the music industry in Vancouver. Needless to say, the pre and post-performance musical talent will be outstanding.
Thu, Feb 19| 6:30 pm | The Vogue Theatre (918 Granville) | $12 | DETAILS

YEAR OF THE SHEEP | Find a way (that doesn’t include driving) to get yourself to Chinatown for the Chinese New Year parade on Sunday. The crowds are always huge (we’re talking in the 50,000+ range) but don’t let that stop you – this is a Vancouver tradition! The parade starts at 11am at the Millennium Gate on Pender and travels east along Pender to Gore. It then turns south onto Gore and west onto Keefer before ending at Abbott. Although weather is expected to be nice, we suggest you take along a hot drink to keep your hands warm and wear a nice thick red (a lucky colour) sweater.
Sun, Feb 22 | 11am | Chinatown | Parade – Free | DETAILS
