The GOODS from Odd Society Spirits
Vancouver, BC | Odd Society Spirits has been harvesting and macerating British Columbia-grown salal berries for the past five years in order to create a West Coast take on the classic British liqueur, sloe gin. Towards the end of every summer, berries are handpicked along coastal B.C., and then steeped in Odd Society Spirits Wallflower Gin. This year, over 90 per cent of the berries came from remote Haida Gwaii, imparting the 2019 release with wild characteristics that reflect its origin. On Thursday, Oct. 10, Odd Society Spirits will release their biggest batch of Salal Gin to date.
Salal berries resemble a cross between a blueberry and blackcurrant but the flavour is far richer and earthier. A savoury tasting berry with tart, tannic and herbaceous properties, salal berries make an ideal substitute for blackthorn berries traditionally used in making sloe gin. This deep crimson liqueur has enough complexity to add depth to a Kir or Kir Royale or rival any gin in a Negroni.
Odd Society Spirits Salal Gin is sold in 375 mL bottles for $30 and can be purchased at Odd Society Spirits (1725 Powell Street) and select private liquor stores.
