Harvest Community Foods Gives a Supplier Shout Out to Hazelmere Organic Farm

Scout works with a lot of local restaurants to get the word out about the cool and delicious things they’re doing, but they couldn’t do what they do without access to awesome ingredients. To get what they need, culinary creatives depend on personal networks of passionate artisans, farmers and producers who often work hard without ever seeing the glory they deserve. Since it’s always good to recognize those who have your back, we bring you the Supplier Shout Out!

Today, we hit up neighbourhood grocer and noodle spot, Harvest Community Foods, to learn more about the amazing local supplier who is providing beautiful produce via an invaluable mutual connection to their Strathcona kitchen…

Which one of your suppliers do you want to give a shout out to? Hazelmere Organic Farm.

What does this supplier supply you? Red Russian Garlic.

Why are you so excited to use this ingredient in particular? We love to use the fresh red Russian garlic from Hazelmere Organic Farm. It is so vibrant in colour and we have been pickling the garlic and using in our daily feature special bowls.

How is this ingredient currently featured on your menu? Harvest feature special – “Udon noodles tossed in garlic scape and watercress pesto with roasted tofu, summer squash, spring peas, and pickled garlic.” (Price may vary. Bowls range from $12.95 – $14.95.)

What makes this supplier so special? We were first introduced to Naty King at Hazelmere by Chef John Bishop and have been hooked using her organic produce ever since. Naty is an amazing person and proud figure of our food community here in Vancouver. When we heard the barn at Hazelmere burned down this past year, we were devasted. We are participating in a special fundraising dinner to support Naty and the farm on September 14. Guests will enjoy a seated dinner at YVR Prep in Burnaby featuring local suppliers and produce donated by Hazelmere Organic Farm and Zaklan Heritage Farm. We hope everyone can stay tuned for the Eventbrite tickets and join us for this special dinner!
