In The New Lounge At Hy’s For Hot Cheese Toast And A Proper Old Fashioned

thumb_IMG_0363_1024

by Shaun Layton | Though we have an incredible cocktail culture in this city, it still pales in comparison to the great drinking corners of the world, places like San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans, and London. Happy Hour just might be the kick in the ass Vancouver needs, and now that it’s legal, it’s good to detail what’s out there. Today we visit the new lounge upstairs at the legendary Hy’s Steakhouse.

Once inside the front door take a hard right up the stairs. Cozy up to the new stunner of a bar from 3pm to 6pm, when classic cocktails are 50% off during happy hour, together with $5 beers and a rotating wine special. It has a big city, power suit, stiff drink feel to it. The smart play is an Old Fashioned or a Negroni expertly made by the humble, always professional barman known as “Shimo”. The prime beef sliders will give you a little tease of the charcoal grilled magic that comes from the kitchen downstairs, but don’t forget the cheese toast ($5). Somehow they they get away with the TV above the bar. Canucks games are enjoyed here without them taking over.
