Crosstown | Place | Crosstown is a completely fabricated name for the condo-lined purgatory between Pender Street and Expo Boulevard. For many years, only realtors referred to this area (which used to be house the rail yards that the neighbouring viaducts were built to traverse) as ‘Crosstown’ so as to positively differentiate it from (formerly terrifying) Gastown, but now it has wormed its way into more common usage.
Usage: “I live in Crosstown.” “Um, no you don’t.”
The people that live there call it that too. What else can you call the dozen or so towers between the Skytrain and Hastings street. It’s not quite “Gastown” because that evokes cobblestone and lofts. It’s not “Chinatown”, you need to head past Columbia for that. So what do you call it?
