This Delicious Documentary on Cuban Food is Screening Soon

Cuban Food Stories, a new documentary exploring Cuba’s food culture history and future, has two screenings in Vancouver coming up at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival (Sept. 29 and Oct. 7) . The film is part of VIFF’s “IMPACT” programming which aims to spotlight “[u]ncompromising films and insightful discussions that spark action and change the way we see the world.” From what we’ve surmised from the movie’s website and reviews, though, Cuban Food Stories is also a delicious visual feast.

The film is directed by Cuban-born American expat Asori Soto, who returned to his homeland after a decade of living in the US. The investigative road trip includes treks through some of Cuba’s most remote areas. Up until recently, Cuban food culture has remained largely unknown (not to mention, unstable) to outsiders due to the island nation’s political isolation. Soto’s journey is a highly personal and unexpected documentary that finally gives Cuba’s complicated food history and rapidly changing present and future their due.

We’re looking forward to getting an authentic taste of Cuba. Start your own stomach growling by watching the trailer below, then grab your tickets for the culinary adventure here. We’ll see you at the show!
