by Andrew Morrison | This summer will mark five years since the launch of Vancouver Urban Winery in what has become known as The Settlement Building at 55 Dunlevy Street. The 7,700 sqft address has since begat Postmark Brewing and Belgard Kitchen, but in the beginning – to me at least – it was all about venue potential. Not having ever set foot in the 90+ year old building before (and being barely aware of its exterior/footprint despite living just a couple of blocks away), I was pretty well floored by its size when I first walked in on its construction five years ago this week. I was not only taken by its sheer volume and all the cool little details within – much of them new, of course – but also by how much work was already going on in the space (the ancillary wine-on-tap FreshTAP operation was already a going concern in one corner, but has long since expanded and relocated to its current address on Vernon Drive). Dinners were being planned, collaborations were being plotted, glasses were being filled. I often get wind of interesting projects long before they even reach the brick and mortar stage, so this was like discovering a lair of sorts, a hive of activity going on in secret. I left a little gobsmacked, and hopeful the end result would be something worth going to. Take a look…
