With our city now so laughably unaffordable, thousands of Vancouverites are stuck imagining wonderful homes instead of living in them. “Spaced” is a record of our minds wandering the world of architecture and design, up and away from the unrewarding realities of shoebox condos, dark basement suites, and sweet fuck all on Craigslist.

(via) Montreal sculptor Jacek Jarnuszkiewicz worked with YH2 architects Marie-Claude Hamelin and Loukas Yiacouvakis to create this home for himself near East Bolton, Quebec. In shape and attitude it strikes us a modern re-imagining of an 11th century Norman-style “keep” castle, a glassy observation tower and last ditch defence again the horde. Its seeming isolation is attractive, as in the covered terrace lookout on the upper storey, but what really seals the envy deal for us are the floor to ceiling panes and the glass ceiling/floor division, which look to bring in more light than would typically be possible in a Canadian conifer clearing. If we could have our version of it anywhere, we’d hide it among the trees just inland from Chesterman Beach in Tofino.
