June is an exciting month in the local art scene with plenty of new and interesting openings that are well worth checking out. Make your way around to the different galleries using this map as your guide…

HOW FAR DO YOU TRAVEL? | Join artist Patrick Cruz for a sound performance and city tour aboard a moving B-line that’s been wrapped with his art. As part of Contemporary Art Gallery’s year-long public art initiative with TransLink, five Canadian artists — Diyan Achjadi, Patrick Cruz, Rolande Souliere, Erdem Ta?delen and Anna Torma—have been invited to create designs to wrap select buses. Cruz’s design stems from his immersive installation Stepmother Tongue (2017/2019), distinct black on white pictographs derived from a pre-coloninal Philippine language.

WOMEN’S WORK | The Burnaby Art Gallery has been striving to steadily acquire more works created by women for its permanent collection. Their latest exhibition, Women’s Work: New Acquisitions, features some of these new works by local and international artists, historical and contemporary, including Diyan Achjadi, Shuvinai Ashoona, Mary Cassatt, Kate Craig, Leonor Fini, Carole Itter, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Agnes Martin, Tania Willard, and many others. The show opens June 20th and runs until August 25th.

MOONLET/MOONLIT | Known for her everyday, beautiful ceramic wares, wobble pots, and ceramic jewelry, Gailan Ngan’s current exhibition at Monte Clark Gallery shows a whole other side of her artistic practice through her latest ceramic sculptures and pinhole photographs. A favourite piece in the show is Pink Moustache, made of clay, slip, glazes, lustre, and rope.

IT GOES ON | While at Monte Clark Gallery, go next door and see the Kim Dorland exhibition at Equinox Gallery for some seriously impressive paintings (one painting fills an entire gallery wall!). These new works continue the artist’s exploration with the landscape and human impact on natural environments. While a $22,000 painting might be out of reach, snag a woodcut print for $20 with proceeds going to charity.

I SEE YOU | Recent paintings and sculptures by Vancouver-based artist Steve Hubert are on view at Field Contemporary. We’re most intrigued by the “in-gallery purpose-built bar [that] hosts ceramic sculpture highlights, and a contemplative sound system sculpture called The Pop-Up Light Situation.”

MOBIL ART | There’s a new artist-run, independent art school in Chinatown offering innovative art making and art history classes all taught by artists (some pretty renowned artists too!). Their mission is to offer art education to people of all ages in the studio and off-site. That’s right! They’re mobile and will bring you creative courses, workshops, and special events. Classes sound fun—we’d love to make a ceramic hanging planter or learn to create a linocut print. Check out upcoming classes for adults and camps for kids here.
