Opening Day Approaches at ‘Flourist’

Several months ago we broke the news that our friends at GRAIN were rebranding as Flourist and opening a new brick and mortar bakery and cafe at 3433 Commercial Street. We recently looked in on progress as opening day nears.

Flourist co-founders Janna Bishop and Shira McDermott are on track to open the doors of new East Van project at some point in the next couple of weeks. They will be producing fresh, stone-milled flour on site for their bread program. We can also expect good coffee, plenty of baked goods, an all-day approachable food program and a retail market offering tools and ingredients to take home. Operating hours will be from 7am to 6pm, seven days a week. Have a drool over the menu…

And for a refresher on the concept, here’s an excerpt of what we wrote back in February:

I’ve seen design renderings of what the 50 seat Flourist will eventually look like (care of Ste. Marie Art + Design), but right now the voluminous space echoes with emptiness. Things are nevertheless moving rapidly off-site, and rather literally. The flour mill that they purchased in Austria has just crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is currently inbound to British Columbia on a freight train.

As you may recall, we posted on the arrival of the mill. It looks pretty cool sitting centre stage in the space. You’ll find a shot of it (or two) among the construction images below, together with a bunch of supplied food photos taken at a recent menu tasting…
