How East Van’s Highly Anticipated ‘Flourist’ Landed Their Massive Bread Oven and Mill

As regular readers may remember, we’re pretty darn excited at the coming of Flourist to East Van. They still have a way to go before they open at 3433 Commercial Street but we thought you might want to witness the exciting arrival of their new on-site bread oven and mill, both landing simultaneously at the address late last week. They came from Austria and were arranged to sail across the Atlantic and travel across Canada to Vancouver by rail.

But how would they fit the behemoth inside the construction site? By removing a section of their frontage, of course! Company co-founders Janna Bishop and Shira McDermott sent us the video above as well as the gallery of photos below. (That’s the oven going through first, followed by the mill.)

If this is the first you’re hearing about the project, here’s an excerpt from our reveal feature back in February.

Shira and Janna aim to have Flourist open by late Spring or early Summer with the goal of producing fresh flour (stone-milled on site), tons of bread, plenty of baked goods, good coffee, an “all-day approachable food program and a retail market offering tools and ingredients for home baking and cooking adventures” from 7am to 6pm, seven days a week. They’re also hoping to get a sidewalk patio going at some point, and might even apply for a liquor license down the line. In any event, it’s certainly an exciting development for the neighbourhood.
