Charlie Kaufman’s Stop-Motion Animation Film “Anomalisa” Added To VIFF

by Ken Tsui | Stop the presses! We’ve already had a taste of the boldly idiosyncratic at the Vancouver International Film Festival this year with films like The Lobster and Entertainment, but the festival has just announced a last minute special presentation of Anomalisa on October 9th. The film is the latest from Charlie Kaufman, the creative mind behind instant the classics Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Adaptation.

Every one of Kaufman’s films is vibrantly original, surreal, and, above all, sincere, and it’s been 7 long years since the grandaddy of cerebral quirk blew our minds with something new. Anomolisa marks his first foray into animation and tells a story about a motivational speaker seeking to transcend the tedium of his life. With Anomalisa recently winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, this is a welcome addition to an already strong year at the festival. Score tickets and details here.

Since a single person (and liver) can only handle so many beers and beer-drinking celebrations, some prioritizing is in order. Topping off our list of events is the imminent (and, in our opinion, non-negotiable) Vancouver Brewers Fest.
