Vancouver, BC | ¿CóMO? Taperia’s executive chef Rafael Racela is stepping out of the kitchen and into the ring next month as a contender in Eastside Rumble 2024 (formerly Aprons for Gloves), a community event supporting the Eastside Boxing Club’s mission to provide a safe space, mentorship, and free boxing training for at-risk youth in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. To boost his fundraising efforts, ¿CóMO? Taperia is unveiling a limited-edition Spanish Smash burger, available after 8 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, beginning July 21 until August 18, 2024.

“Raf is not only a talented chef but also an incredible human being – when he let us know he was going to train for Eastside Rumble this year, we knew we wanted to do something to help,” says Shaun Layton, co-owner of ¿CóMO? Taperia. “Nothing brings people together like a good smash burger, and by enjoying Raf’s new Spanish Smash, funds raised will go towards a good cause.”

Available Sunday to Thursday, from July 21 to August 18, 2024, the Spanish Smash features ground pork and beef, crispy jamon serrano, guindilla pickles, Manchego, burguesa sauce, and iceberg lettuce. Guests can order it with black caviar potato chips for $20 or with black caviar potato chips and a pint of beer for $25. $2 from every burger will go towards Eastside Boxing Club.

On his participation in Eastside Rumble 2024, Racela explains, “I am joining this year’s 2024 Eastside Rumble to help raise awareness for the Downtown Eastside community. As someone who grew up in East Vancouver, I’ve seen the struggles of kids raised by immigrant parents, who had to work tirelessly and endlessly to support their family. I saw the effects it had on their children, often left without much supervision. Eastside Boxing Club’s program helps steer youth in a positive direction for their future.

The restaurant industry gave me an opportunity to make something of myself, and this Rumble allows me to help give our younger generation the opportunity to enjoy this sport, stay fit, and stay off the streets.”

In addition to the Spanish Smash, people can also donate to Racela’s Fundrazr page directly and/or cheer him on in-person on August 22, 2024.
