The Goods from Burdock & Co
Vancouver, BC | Burgundy is not known for welcoming outsiders. The vineyards are ancient, the growers fiercely local and the rules are rigid.
Enter Mark Haisma, the forward-thinking Australian who arrived without land, family holdings or a Burgundian surname. Then raised a few (figurative) pitchforks when he dared to plant shiraz in the Mâcon AOC to explore the impacts of climate change and for “the pure excitement of going against the grain.”
Today, he produces some of the venerable region’s most highly coveted, critically acclaimed small-lot wines.
Burdock & Co is thrilled to host an exclusive dinner with this revered vigneron and bon vivant on March 23, 2026. The night offers a rare opportunity to taste a lineup of six extremely limited wines. His total annual production is approximately 1,000 cases, largely sold through private mailing lists.
“There’s an honesty to these wines that I connect with,” says Burdock & Co wine director Maisie Ryan. “They don’t rely on gloss. They clearly show their sites in a way that feels unforced. That transparency is important to me. Our ethos at Burdock has always been about thoughtful sourcing and letting ingredients speak clearly; these wines operate the same way.”
Chef Andrea Carlson has designed a special seasonal menu to echo their energy and nuance.
After beginning his career at Australia’s renowned Yarra Yering winery, Haisma moved to France in 2007 to pursue his passion for pinot noir and syrah at their source. Before establishing his own domaine, he built his reputation as a micro-négociant, sourcing parcels from trusted growers all across Burgundy (and a tiny amount from Northern Rhône), vinifying each wine with an artisanal, hands-off approach in his own unassuming cellar, Le Shed.
“He seems to have struck gold,” British wine critic Jancis Robinson wrote. “His wines have an excellent balance between fruit, expression and refreshment without being in any way wimpish. They are also, appetizingly, bone dry.”
