Kokanee

Welcome to the Vancouver Lexicon. Its purpose is to pin down the patois of the City of Vancouver by recording its toponyms, nicknames, slang terms, personalities, places, and other Van-centric things. Full A-Z here.

Kokanee | beer, fish | A basic, inexpensive, Pilsner-style beer (5.3 ABV) long brewed in the interior BC town of Creston. Its memorable television advertisements often include a mischievous, beer-loving, ranger-eluding Sasquatch bro. The beer was named after the Kokanee Glacier, which took its name from the Okanagan First Nations word for the freshwater sockeye salmon found in the region’s many lakes.

Usage: “When I was a little kid I thought my Dad liked Kokanee because it was somehow flavoured with his favourite fish…”
