I just took my first look inside what will soon become the latest (and possibly greatest) location of La Taqueria. The local company took possession of the 1,800 sqft space at 2450 Yukon Street (formerly the Edge Cafe) last month with hopes for a summer opening.
The new 60 seat restaurant will follow the recently revamped Hastings location in that it will be counter-service in the daytime and full-service in the evenings. It will also sport a heated and shaded patio — a first for La Taqueria, not to mention the chainlet’s largest bar to date with some 18 seats. And what I nice looking bar it will be, with its wooden backbar shelving unit having been sourced from an old school convenience store in Montreal (via Scott Landon Antiques).
The new restaurant will be replacing the La Taqueria one block west at Cambie and Broadway, which is closing on the 24th of June to make way for a new building. As to when the new one will open depends entirely on the city. Co-owner Marcelo Romero thinks the middle of July is possible, but it could be as late September if the powers that be slow things down for him. We’ll have to wait and see.
The operating hours will be from 11am until midnight to start — perhaps as late as 2am on weekends. Take a look inside: it’s still very much a raw space, but that big commissary kitchen in the back (with loading bay door) looks like its ready to take on the company’s expanding catering operations!
