Western Alienation | Idea | The concept extends back to before Confederation and the debate surrounding British Columbia’s inclusion into the dominion of Canada. The sheer distance from Ottawa as well as the the physical barriers of the prairies and the Rocky Mountains creates a psychological barrier which results in political isolation from the rest of Canada and the centre of the universe. It led to the completion of the transcontinental railway with Vancouver as its terminus. So, in a way, we are products of western alienation.
