Residential Schools | Event | Nothing shattered the collective illusion that Canada was some sort of benevolent, post-colonial, multicultural beacon of tolerance than the legacy of our Residential School system. It was a core facet of the Indian Act, a collection of policies designed to “civilize” First Nations kids. The schools led to the deaths of some 4,000 children. Some of them, incredibly, remained open until 1996.
