The Greatest Thing The Universe Gave Our Table This Week, #831

Two of the greatest culinary traditions of our country come from Quebec. The first and best known outside la belle provence is poutine (duh), while the second and lesser known is tourtiere. If you’ve never heard of it before, it’s a savoury pie made with pork (and/or veal, beef, game) that usually anchors the Christmas Eve feast every year. Sadly, they aren’t commonly available in Vancouver. I say sadly because they’re five kinds of phenomenal. The most readily available (year round) tourtieres can be had at West Vancouver’s kickass Savary Island Pie Company, but the fabulous, clove-scented one that recently graced our family dinner table (pictured above) came from Les Amis du Fromage. Each year, the proprietess makes several dozen. This was my first pie from Les Amis – savagely devoured between my wife and kids and I in a single sitting. Word is it was one of the very last.  Bummer.
