Sipping and Feasting Under the Harvest Moon in Abbotsford

For a long time I’d been keen to make the trek out to Abbotsford’s breweries, but figuring out the logistics of a sober return trip seemed too big obstacle an overcome. Thankfully, beer is a powerful motivator, and last week things finally fell into place when I got the opportunity to attend a special event showcasing not only the beer of the area but also its many other bounties. A shuttle was included. Bonus: helicopter ride!

The magical setting for this year’s Under the Harvest Moon dinner was the field behind Nature’s Pickin’s Market and neighbouring Eco Dairy demonstration farm where we were greeted by a welcoming committee that included a massive turkey in full plumage and a gang of roof-dwelling goats.

As the evening progressed, guests were treated to a feast showcasing the best of Abbotsford’s food and beverage, from the foraged to fermented, and all to the tunes of husband-and-wife duo, Coalmont.  The multi-course dinner was prepared and plated by Restaurant 62 Chef Jeff Massey and the team from Harvest Grill ‘n’ Greens – two restaurants that I hope to try the next time I get to Abbotsford. (The table loaded with treats from Duft and Co. Bakehouse (almost) looked too perfect to dismantle and eat.)

Of course, the alcohol flowed, courtesy of wineries Ripples and Singletree, plus a trifecta of Abbotsford breweries. Standouts included Old Abbey Ales‘ delicious Sour Raspberry, Ravens Brewing Company‘s West Coast Pale, and Field House‘s exceptional 10% ABV Dark Saison. Sated and feeling adventurous, I made sure to take full advantage of an offered unique aerial tour of the very fields and farms that supplied the bounty, as provided by Compass Heli Tours. Check out some candids of the shindig below.
