“Shika Provisions” Set To Open May 1st For The Summer Season On Bowen Island

by Andrew Morrison | It’s been a long time coming, but Shika Provisions on Bowen Island will be reopening its doors for its second season on Friday, May 1st. We love the living daylights out of the place, especially the addictive rice balls. It’s a sentiment we also share for its two sister eateries, Kuma in Tofino and Basho Cafe in Hastings-Sunrise. If you get the opportunity to visit Bowen this Spring/Summer, lunch at Shika is a must! The skinny from the restaurant:

Steps off of the ferry on the Bowen Island Marina Pier in Snug Cove, Shika serves take-out rice bowls, grilled rice balls and little mochi sweets from Basho. Rice bowls include two new additions, Tuna Tataki with pickled veggies and Teriyaki Chicken with black sesame sauce, as well as the crowd favourite Teri Taco with pulled pork, fresh salsa and guacamole and Miso Tofu Veggie Bowl packed full of fresh veggies. Shika’s grilled rice balls (yaki-onigiri) is a hearty savoury snack and perfect for kids with a choice of pulled pork, aged cheddar cheese, or seaweed and sesame, grilled with soy and butter for crispy goodness. The Picnic Box is filled with rice balls, pickled veggies, chorizo and mochi sweets, to be taken with you on your day’s destination on the trials, on the ocean, or at the beach.

Bowen Island is easily accessible by taking a 20-minute BC Ferries sailing from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver (watch for changes in schedule starting May 14). While only a few kilometres from the mainland, Bowen Island is a pacific northwest playground for day trips or weekend travel with mountain forest trails, panoramic views of Howe Sound from the top of Mt. Gardner and beaches all around the island.

Vancouver’s Best Japanese Curries, Our Favourites Mapped

Japanese curry doesn’t chase the spotlight the way ramen or gyoza do, but it has always been one of Japan’s most reliable comfort meals: hot, filling, and easy on the wallet. With Vancouver’s cooler weather still lingering, it’s exactly the kind of satisfying bowl that hits the spot.
