“Cheat Day” Serving Up Delicious Grilled Cheese Sandwiches At 552 Seymour

IMG_0331

We recently took a peek inside a small sliver of a new eatery at 552 Seymour cheekily called Cheat Day. They specialize in gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches using white, brioche, or sourdough bread together with a variety of cheeses and other tasty inserts. The “Classic” ($5) was all sold out already so we went to town on one made with brie, peach jam, peach chunks and caramelized onions ($8). It was a delicious reminder that focusing on doing one thing really well in brick and mortar – a la Meat & Bread – is never a bad idea if the execution is solid. It might seemingly/conceptually be better suited to a food truck, but who doesn’t like a grilled cheese (except vegans)? And nevermind that they don’t have a liquor license (only sodas and such). Check it out and dig the uncommon interior, where toy soldiers battle on the walls, bears blow feather bubbles and gleaming white Eames-ish chairs are sculpted for butts belonging to those tight on time and cash. Cheat Day is open from 12 to 8pm.

  1. Saw this walking the other day…love the name of this place! AWESOME concept. Can’t wait to try it.

  2. It’s no surprise that with our inclement climate and over regulations regarding food carts, it is more attractive to open a brick and mortar establishment (not to mention likely cheaper!)

  3. I don’t necessarily want to eat off a truck all of the time, and this looks like a cost effective fun alternative. Who doesn’t like grilled cheese (except for vegans)?

  4. Q: who doesn’t like grilled cheese?
A: The rise of the gluten free crowd, me included

Vancouver’s Best Japanese Curries, Our Favourites Mapped

Japanese curry doesn’t chase the spotlight the way ramen or gyoza do, but it has always been one of Japan’s most reliable comfort meals: hot, filling, and easy on the wallet. With Vancouver’s cooler weather still lingering, it’s exactly the kind of satisfying bowl that hits the spot.
