Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

scoutlist

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. You can also check it out in the Globe & Mail, from our calendar to theirs…and yours!

PIE | Autumn is such a good time for pie. Sure, summer makes a good argument with raspberry rhubarb, strawberry, and that brief window of peach pies, but are not apple, pumpkin and pecan some of the best? Well, this is the season, so take full advantage. Get into it with a pie-making class at The Uncommon Cafe. Head to the East Hastings spot for an evening of instruction that will school you on how to make great dough and 3 pie fillings. Pie!
Oct 7 | 6-9 pm | The Uncommon Cafe (477 Powell St) | DETAILS

TOMBOY | Fall is an inspiring time for fashion. There’s no need to go all out with massive multi-piece, wallet-cleaning shopping spree; just refresh your wardrobe with a few well chosen items. Good news: Vancouver-based design team Kyle Kozma and Jessica Matthew make some seriously beautiful menswear-inspired women’s shirts that tick all the boxes: style, simplicity and quality craftsmanship. One of these versatile buddies added to your closet will brighten things up. The duo set up their Power Of My People line at eyeglass shop Bailey Nelson this week from Oct. 8-15. Expect versatile, fashionable shirts, a cool photographic essay profiling local makers, and some sexy eyewear at this pop-up.
Oct 8-15 | 5pm | 10-5pm | Bailey Nelson (303 Cambie St.) | DETAILS

LISTEN | Anecdotal Evidence is a storytelling series focused on telling stories from the human side of science: “The rapture in the research and humanity behind the abstract…” From event organizers: “Everyone knows scientists are remote intellectuals uncluttered by untidy human emotions. Or are they? Ever wondered what stories lie behind the data? Or how non-scientists experience science in their lives?” Even if you haven’t wondered, aren’t you curious now? We sure are. Head to The Railway Club on Thursday night to listen to 15 brave souls tell of how science impacted their lives on a personal level. The stories are true, 7 (ish)-minute long and told live onstage without notes. Unscripted is always the most fun.
Thu, Oct 8 | 7pm | The Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street) | $5 suggested donation | DETAILS

OPENING | Vancouver artist Janice Wu launches a solo show at The Back Gallery Project this week. “Meticulously drawn with pencil and watercolour in painstaking realism, Wishes reveals subtle variations of familiar ephemera. Postcards act as shortcut expressions, filled with romantic clichés, poetic exchanges and feelings of longing; yet also disclose monotonous details, seemingly futile information, and awkward attempts to describe new encounters. Wishes addresses the past, present, and future and the poignant nuances that surface from our efforts to capture, document, and read experiences. ” Poke your head into the opening reception on Thursday night. It’s always great to experience a collection of art with the artist in attendance and a room full or like-minded enthusiasts. If Thursday doesn’t work, the gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 1pm and 5pm, and by appointment.
Thu, Oct 8 | 6-9pm | Back Gallery Project (602 E. Hastings) | DETAILS

WATCH | There are only a few remaining days of The Vancouver International Film Festival. If you haven’t had a chance to see a VIFF film yet, it’s time to get hustling. This week we suggest slipping out of work for an early lunch break to catch City of Gold, a documentary about Pulitzer Prize winning Los Angeles Times food critic Jonathan Gold. Scheduled to end at 12:30pm, there is still time left to grab something quick to eat (you’ll be freakin’ starving at this point) and the SFU Theatre is conveniently located close to a number of fine take-out food sources (Meat & Bread, The Juice Truck, La Taqueria, Tacofino and Revolver Coffee are all a stones’ throw from theatre doors).
Thu, Oct. 8 | 11am | SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts | DETAILS

CHILL | Hit the Astoria Pub on Thursday night for a no-fuss beer and some dark eighties music. DJs Nikki Nevver, Vanessa Turner, Suzanne Hampton, and Jeremiah Hayward transport back in time with tracks from late 70’s and 80’s punk scene. Sometimes you just need a little Joy Division.
Thu, Oct 8 | 8 pm–1am | Astoria Pub (769 E Hastings) | DETAILS

SCORE | The Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby hosts Art From The Attic this Saturday. Search through over 1,500 drawings, paintings, photos, posters, and prints to find a treasure perfect to hang above your mantle. Expect everything from impressionist experiments and portraits of forgotten faces to 80’s art and boy band posters. Prices are reasonable and funds raised go to charity.
Oct 10 | 10am–3pm | Scandinavian Community Centre (6540 Thomas St,, Burnaby) | DETAILS

LAUGH | Not only is laughter said to strengthen the immune system, boost energy, and lower stress levels – it feels good. Two fine opportunities to laugh present on Friday night. The first is the Lady Show at Little Mountain Gallery (featuring a line-up of six talented women with a plan to entertain with comedy sketches, stand-up, nonsense and more). The second is Vancouverite: A Comedy Show, which goes down at Hot Art Wet City Gallery. It takes a crack at the hilariously painful adjustment process of becoming a Vancouverite. Do yourself a solid and make some time to laugh this week.
Fri, Oct 9 | 8pm | Little Mountain Gallery (195 E 26th Ave) | $10 | DETAILS
Fri, Oct 9 | 8pm | Hot Art Wet City (2206 Main (@ 6th)) | $6 | DETAILS

TASTE | Tonari Gumi (The Japanese Community Volunteers Association) is a grassroots organization that supports seniors in the Japanese Canadian community through volunteerism, support, and outreach. This Saturday, they’re hosting a sake tasting night, and we think this group of Vancouverites probably know what’s up when it comes to sake. Look forward to tasting over 40 kinds of premium sake and umeshu (plum wine) paired with hors d’oeuvres made by great restaurants such as Minami, Forage, Hapa Izakaya, and Octopus’ Garden. If the food, drink, and cause weren’t enough to seal the deal , consider also that the always eloquent Margaret Gallagher (CBC) will be there to emcee. Bonus: silent auction and raffle prize draws.
Sat, Oct 10 | 7-10pm | Coast Coal Harbour (1180 W. Hastings) | $75 | DETAILS

THANKSGIVING | Stoked on Thanksgiving but not on the idea of wrangling a turkey into your oven and then cleaning up after the battle? Take the easy way out: grab a few pals and make for The Irish Heather and its Thanksgiving-themed Long Table Dinner. For only $18 you can dig into turkey pot pie filled with creamed turkey stew and topped with a layer of cranberry stuffing; savoury garlic mashed potatoes; home-style gravy; and fresh autumn vegetables. That’s a pretty sweet deal. Seating is limited, and it will sell out, so grab that seat now (email reso.irishheather [at] gmail.com).
Sun, Oct 11 | 7:30pm | The Irish Heather (212 Carrall Street) | DETAILS
