FOREIGN RESTAURANT PORN: Melbourne’s Shed 5 Would Fit Nicely On Our Sad Seawall

by Andrew Morrison | Foreign Restaurant Porn is a new Scout column that will look at a covet-worthy restaurant (from parts afar) each week and use it to plug a hole – geographically or conceptually – in Vancouver’s own restaurant landscape. We begin with Shed 5, a waterfront restaurant new to Melbourne, Australia.

What it is: Shed 5 | Greek-heavy, inventive, pan-Mediterranean cuisine | 120 seats | Casual | Designed by Rod Faucheux & Stan Sarris of Sydney’s Loop Creative

Where it is: in Melbourne, Australia’s expanding South Wharf Development.

Where we wish it was: Take your pick – Olympic Village (replacing Tap & Barrel), Granville Island (replacing Bridges), Coal Harbour (replacing Lift), English Bay (replacing The Boathouse), Kits Beach (replacing Milestones), West Van (replacing The Beach House) Fairview Slopes (replacing Monk McQueens), the original Nu (now vacant), or next to (but not supplanting) the Galley at the Jericho Sailing Club.

Why we wish it was there: because with over 20km of seawall, it seems a little absurd that we can only recommend two or three waterfront restaurants with confidence. Most of what we are subjected to are .45 calibre locations with 22. calibre intentions – be they chain outlets or places that care little for quality, originality, or their unwritten responsibility (by way of their attractive addresses) to do our city’s food reputation proud. What’s more, we mostly suck hard at Greek food.

  1. i think about this all the time.there is not one recommendable seaside restaurant or patio. the are all sub par

  2. Newsflash, Shed5 is actualy a chain from New Zealand and the food is very comparable to Bridges having eaten at the one in Wellington. And no doubt there is much better greek food in australia given theres about 10 times the greek population in oz.

  3. I’m sorry, Mr. Smartypants (and we don’t mean to embarrass you), but you are incorrect. Shed 5 in Melbourne is an independent, stand-alone one-off by Greek Australians Stan Sarris and Vas Donoudis. It is not part of the Nourish Group that owns a restaurant by the same name in Wellington. Thanks for reading.
