Tea & Two Slices: On Bubbles, Taxing The Poor And Living In A Surveillance Society

by Sean Orr | CTV News reminds us that the poor pay a higher tax rate than the rich in BC. Where is the outrage, Maureen Bader? Where is the outrage, Fraser Institute? [sound of crickets] Yeah, that’s what I thought…

According to the Vancouver Sun, home prices in BC will rise 13 per cent this year. Can’t you just hear that bubble getting ready to burst?

From the Courier, we learn that at least seven surveillance cameras were deployed during the Cup final, this despite the Mayor’s denial. For some reason that reminds me of a scene in the Simpsons where Homer watches Barney’s movie and says he’ll never have another drink again. Then a beer guy walks by and says “beer here” and Homer replies, “I’ll take ten.”

CKNW asks: is there a VPD mole? Hmm. “Mole” sounds a little obsolete in the post-Soviet era? How about “anarchist”? That seems to be the running scapegoat these days. Get with it, radio.

Sun Media’s Krista Erickson complains of being bullied, mocks Margie Gillis. I love the idea of a gang of ballet dancers picking on fat old white dudes. It’s sort of like a fantasy for me…

Multibillion-dollar plant for B.C. shale gas proposed. What the frack?

Bonus: the legend of Marchand grows.

  1. I read your site daily but posting the tax article and asking for outrage is a little much. It’s an unbelievably biased article that quite frankly tries to fool the reader into exactly what you are asking for, ‘outrage.’

    Notwithstanding consumption taxes that are equal to everyone — of course the rich pay a lesser tax rate. But the total dollar amount they contribute is much much higher than the poor obviously. That is how our tax system works and isn’t a secret but it can be applied to every tax bracket not just what most people call rich. If you made 20k a year you would probably think 50k a year was rich. Just like someone making 50k thinks 100k is rich.

    Just dealing with BC tax rates on personal income;

    first $36,146 5.06%
    over $36,146 up to $72,293 7.70%
    over $72,293 up to $83,001 10.50%
    over $83,001 up to $100,787 12.29%
    over $100,787 14.70%

    So the “rich” guy making 45K pays a less overall rate than the guy making 30K. That’s the way it is for everyone. Just like the guy making 80K compared to another guy making 150k. I do think that there should be just a flat tax rate for everyone but I really hate these types of articles that try to fool people into being outraged by manipulating or omitting data when the same principal can be applied to every tax bracket, not just the top earners.

  2. I’ve got to admit, I don’t get how that makes it less. It would seem incrementally more with each successive tax bracket.
