On Ghomeshi Vexation & An Old White Man’s Discoveries in Chinatown

by Sean Orr | Via Buzzfeed: I Hope The Ghomeshi Verdict Makes You Fucking Furious. It most certainly does, but then again, so does pretty much everything I read in the news.

Maybe the verdict wasn’t such a surprise because it happens all the time.

Rage is great, but official complaints are better. So is education. Perhaps we stop teaching women to be congenial at all times?

Does this mean that women have to be better at being victims? One of the victims says yes, and is helping other women to come forward. Lucy DeCoutere doesn’t have any lessons however. She’s just crushed.

Meanwhile, Sandy Garossino says we shouldn’t blame the judge:

“Unfortunately, it’s very hard for me as a feminist to say that. But [the witnesses] did avoid telling the truth. They did suppress important material facts that they should have made.”

This associate professor of law says the trial wasn’t a judgment on sexual assault laws.

It would be a mistake to view the trial as emblematic of everything that remains wrong with sexual assault and the criminal justice system.

Maybe I don’t know enough about the law, but that is exactly how I’m viewing it.

Meanwhile, I Believe You graffiti pops up in Vancouver.

Via the Vancouver Sun, we get word of an old white man who discovers Chinatown for the first time: Old and new Chinatown meet in the 200-block of East Georgia.

More injustice: Mermaid tail safety concerns lead to temporary ban at Chilliwack pool. “It’s just a really fun way to get out and exercise. And also you get a lot of attention and it’s really fun having people think you’re a real mermaid sometimes.” That’s kind of like how I thought this article was real! Oh…it is? Keep it up, CBC.

Rendered speechless: Metro Vancouver seeks public comment on reduction plant. With a macabre lede worthy of Lovecraft: “Every summer the smell of death descends over the east Vancouver waterfront…” Maybe it’ll help dampen property prices…

City of Vancouver looking for artists to beautify utility boxes. Attn. designers: Please make one that is a Real Estate “For Sale” sign with the estimated cost of the land they’re sitting on. I’ll split the grand with you 50-50.

The most Canadian thing ever: Canadian showdown: Mountie halts highway traffic for stubborn beaver.

  1. Only a moron would be furious over the Ghomeshi verdict. Justice was served no matter how much the Tumblrina and SJW’s whine about it.

  2. It seems like the verdict in Mr. Ghomeshi’s trial shouldn’t be shocking to any level headed person. When a witness lies under oath their credibility is lost. If they had been honest about contacting Mr. Ghomeshi after they claimed they no longer had any contact with him, the Crown would have had the opportunity to explain that this is a common occurrence in cases involving sexual assault. The fact they contacted Mr. Ghomeshi is not the reason for a not guilty verdict. However contacting Mr. Ghomeshi and lying under oath that they did not have any more contact with him is what lead to his acquittal. Why do so many people have a difficult time understanding this?

I enjoy your column Sean, but had no idea you were a SJW. Thought you were more level headed and intelligent.

  3. I provided links to this exact argument as well by Sandy Garossino. The counter argument however is that what this trial says is that victims of sexual assault need to be better at being victims.
