Ten Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now And Next Week

FullSizeRender-(7)

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. You can also check it out in the Globe & Mail, from our calendar to theirs…and yours!

MOCKUMENTARY | This Is That is a current affairs program on CBC Radio that doesn’t get bogged down by sticking to the issues – it just makes them up and then passes off the satirical results as real content during regular programming just to fuck with people. It’s a format we dig. Grab a seat at The Vogue Theatre this Saturday afternoon and laugh your way through a live performance with This Is That superstars Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring. From The Vogue: “Nothing is off limits – politics, business, culture, justice, science – if it’s relevant to Canadians, This Is That finds a way to fabricate a story.”
Sat, Feb 27 | 2pm | Vogue Theatre (918 Granville St.) | $21 | DETAILS

LAUGH | American Stand-up comedian Hari Kondabolu is at the Biltmore on Thursday night. Not only has he been described by The New York Times as “one of the most exciting political comics in standup today”, but he’s also funny enough to have appeared on Letterman, Conan and Kimmel. Also, not many comics have Masters degrees in Human Rights from the London School of Economics, so…see you there.
Thu, Feb 25 | Doors 7pm, show 8pm | The Biltmore Cabaret | $21 | DETAILS

TEEN ANGST | Comedian and bad writing sadist Sara Bynoe hosts another one of her hilarious Teen Angst nights this Thursday. From Sara’s website: “Somewhere in the back of your closet gathering dust and turning yellow with age is comedic gold. Those old journals, poems, and essays you wrote as a teenager when you thought you could do no wrong, would probably make you cringe at your former feelings if you were to read them today. Now, imagine sharing them in front of an audience. That’s exactly what happens at Teen Angst.”
Thu, Feb 25 | 8-10pm | Fox Cabaret (2321 Main Street) | $10 | DETAILS

ART | The North-West Ceramics Foundation and Emily Carr University have joined forces to present a free public lecture featuring local ceramicist Tam Irving this week. Learn about functional sculpture, making glaze from rocks, and the concept of ceramic still life. This free lecture is perfect for art enthusiasts and pottery wonks looking for a bit of inspiration.
Thu, Feb 25 | 7:30-9pm | Emily Carr University (Room 245, North Building) | DETAILS

CLASSICAL | Put on your fancy clothes and scoot out to UBC for a night of classical music this Friday. University Singers and UBC Choral Union perform Bach to Spring at the Chan Centre. The program for the evening is – as you might have guessed – Bach heavy, but it also includes pieces by Chesnokov, Chatman and a bit of Biebl (who, in case you aren’t familiar, wrote a little ditty called Ave Maria).
Fri, Feb 26 | 8pm | Chan Centre (6265 Crescent Rd., UBC) | $8 | DETAILS

TRIP OUT | There’s a crazy film screening at the Rio Friday night. House (1977) is a Japanese horror flick that defies satisfyingly clean synopses in favour of “you just have to see it” urgings. Here’s what the Rio came up with: “a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of ‘Scooby-Doo’ as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home who comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects. Equally absurd and nightmarish, HOUSE might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet.” Sounds creepy as all get-out.
Fri, Feb 26 | Doors 11:30, Movie 11:59 | Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway) | $8 | DETAILS

NOODLES | Ramen Gojiro opens its doors this week. Gojiro (owned by the same crew who brought us The Ramen Butcher in Chinatown) is serving up what they’re calling “jiro style” noodles. Rain is scheduled to roll in this weekend — nothing picks up a soggy Saturday like a steaming bowl of ramen. Read more about Gojiro here.

CITY | Putting a roof over your head is a challenge for a growing number of Vancouverites, but housing for the marginalized takes the challenge to a whole new place. Tag along on a walking tour with former executive director of the Portland Hotel Society, Liz Evans and CEO of VanCity Enterprises, Dale McClanaghan as they cover some key Chinatown, Gastown and Downtown Eastside affordable housing sites and discuss experiences with planning, funding and community services, all while speaking to the complexities of housing issues in the city. Meet at the North East Entrance of Tinseltown/International Village Mall at 88 West Pender Street at 1:45pm. This event is by donation ($5 per participant would be appreciated). Email akollins [at] museumofvancouver.ca to register.
Sat, Feb 27 | 2-3:30pm | Various locations | $5 donation | DETAILS

COOK | The Grandview Woodland Food Connection is hosting a fantastic Taste of Latin American food workshop at Britannia Centre this Sunday. The focus of the class will be Chile Rellenos. Learn about the various ingredients and techniques involved in making this dish from scratch. From event organizers: “Originally from Mexico, the Chile Rellenos is a dish is enjoyed in many variations. Each Latin country has some twist on this delicious dish which is so versatile it can be enjoyed by vegans, vegetarians and meat lovers alike. We will focus on the Salvadoran version which tones down the spice so the sauce is the primary character!” To attend, call 604-718-5800.
Sun, Feb 28 | 2-5pm | Britannia Community Center (1661 Napier) | $30 | DETAILS
