On Fearing Fear Itself & Moving Our Marginalized Beyond The Margins

by Sean OrrWith support from Liberals, the Tories pass controversial Bill C-51. Ah, but never fear, it’s not law yet. It still has to go through the…oh, never mind. “Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s national security adviser told the Senate national security committee last week that the agency’s new powers are not as scary as their critics contend…” It’s still super scary, but not that scary.

I guess Vote Together seems pretty silly now that the Liberals and Conservatives have, you know, voted together. Or as Charles Demers put it: “How could the son of the man who invoked the War Measures Act vote for C51?!?! Wait, sorry…when I phrase it like that it actually makes a ton of sense…”

As it turns out, even Harper didn’t vote for it.

Meanwhile, our war on terror children isn’t going so well. Harper unrepentant in wake of Omar Khadr’s release. Which tees up this statement from Khadr’s lawyer: “Mr. Harper is a bigot. Mr. Harper doesn’t like Muslims”. Dennis Edney for Supreme Chancellor of the Universe!

Conservatives suck at losing: People’s Republic of Albertastan’ T-shirts hit the market. Dear graphic designer Laura Lynn Johnston of Edmonton: I will be in your city in one month. Please save me a shirt. And maybe a hug.

One man’s treasure is another man’s junk: Junk market mayhem: Locals livid by Vancouver plans to push vendors east. Yes, let’s just push the marginalized even further away! And while we’re at it, let’s also dehumanize and delegitimize their niche economy by comparing it to the The Night of the Living Dead

Let’s push them all the way out to the suburbs! Suburbs pricier than Vancouver when transportation factored in: study. All those bridges and tunnels sure are adding up. Time to get a condo in Chinatown.

After all, it’s the future: “No more land” for single-family houses in Vancouver, Urban Futures planner says. 86′ land. Density is back on the menu.

Hero: UBC student writes 52,438 word architecture dissertation with no punctuation — not everyone loved it. Wow, he really put the “dis” in dissertation.
